Use the joy you find in baking to serve the Church...be a part of our group of Holy Rollers and help in Prosphora Baking. Prosphora is the bread that becomes the Body of Christ at every Liturgy. If you are interested, come to the church hall on Saturday, June 27th, starting at 10:00AM, and get involved in this very spiritually rewarding undertaking.
Our Annual Patronal Feast Celebration will take place on Monday, June 29th. (This will be Father David's FINAL LITURGY with us.) Immediately after the Liturgy and Procession, there will be a potluck meal in the hall. Come enjoy good food and fellowship! ALL are invited to attend this FREE event. A sign-up sheet is posted in the church vestibule for all those who would like to donate something (covered dish, salad, dessert, beverage, etc.) for the repast. Let us join together as a parish family and honor the heavenly protectors of our community, SS. Peter and Paul, and bid a fond farewell to Fr. David.
Tickets are now on sale for the Men's Club Annual Spaghetti Dinner to be held on Sat. July 11th, starting at 6pm, in the hall. (NOTE: Vespers & General Confession will be served at 5pm). Besides a terrific meal of spaghetti, Carmen Spezzi's Sauce, sausage, meatballs, tossed salad, bread, icecream and coffee, there will be some special entertainment you won't want to miss - Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin & Marilyn Monroe will be in the house for two sets! Tickets are $40 each ($20 for takeout from 6-7pm without the show. Soda an water will be available for purchase at this BYOB event. The first saints canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church, sons of St. Vladimir who chose martyrdom over civil war. Celebrated on July 24th, these 'Passion-Bearers' were murdered by their brother but refused to resist, following Christ's example of non-violence. They represent the choice of peace over power and Christ-like suffering.
Holy Confession
The sacrament of reconciliation through which the faithful confess their sins to a priest and receive absolution. Also called the sacrament of repentance or penance, confession restores the baptismal purity lost through sin and reconciles the penitent with God and the Church. The penitent stands before an icon of Christ while confessing to the priest, who acts as a witness and minister of God's forgiveness. The priest then covers the penitent's head with his epitrachelion (stole) and pronounces the prayer of absolution.
Vespers
The evening prayer service of the Orthodox Church, traditionally celebrated at sunset. Vespers includes psalms, hymns, scripture readings, and incense. On Saturday evenings, Great Vespers is often combined with the Sunday Divine Liturgy. The service marks the end of the liturgical day and prepares the faithful for rest and reflection.
St. Jacob of Alaska
The Alaskan native who became an Orthodox priest and missionary to his own people. Celebrated on July 26th, Jacob (Netsvetov) was the first Alaska Native ordained to the priesthood. He served on the Yukon River and translated liturgical texts into native languages. He represents indigenous Orthodox ministry and cultural adaptation of the faith.
Divine Liturgy
The central worship service of the Orthodox Church, celebrating the Eucharist (Holy Communion). Usually celebrated on Sundays and feast days, the Divine Liturgy consists of the Liturgy of the Word (scripture readings) and Liturgy of the Faithful (Eucharistic prayer and communion). The most common forms are the Liturgies of St. John Chrysostom and St. Basil the Great.
Procession of the Cross
The ceremonial procession of the Holy Cross on August 1st, traditionally marking the beginning of the Dormition Fast. This feast involves carrying the Cross in procession for veneration and blessing. It serves as spiritual preparation for the Dormition feast and emphasizes the Cross as our protection and source of strength.
